Becoming A Successful Bowler

Bowling seems like a simple enough game, right? You just aim and then fling the ball toward the pins. It did not feel so simple when I decided to give it a shot. The ball was big, heavy, and hard to control. I was afraid that I would not be able to get my fingers out in time. What if the ball DRAGGED ME down the aisle!? When I finally did swing it and let go, I stumbled backwards and almost crashed into the floor. Obviously, this wasn’t going to be as easy as I had imagined. I needed to do some research!

Let’s start with the basics. Bowling is a fun and exciting sport that anybody can play. The goal of a bowler is to strike down a set of pins at the end of an aisle by swinging a big old ball down it. Each side of the line has gutters to collect badly aimed balls. To play, you need special shoes called ‘bowling shoes’ and a special ball called a ‘bowling ball’. The bowling ball is a big and heavy ball with three holes. One whole is for the thumb, and the other two are for the fingers.

The first step to becoming a successful bowler is choosing the right bowling ball. Since bowling is based on aim, you need a ball that you can easily fling. The ball shouldn’t be either too heavy or too light. It needs to be light enough to fling comfortably, but strong enough to roll down the aisle and strike down all the pins. The ideal bowling ball is approximately one tenths of your body weight. If you are two hundred pounds, you would need a twenty pound ball. Bowling balls are also gender-specific. Your thumb and fingers should be able to fit comfortably into the bowling ball holes. A male bowling ball typically has bigger holes to allow for bigger fingers. There is nothing wrong with a thin fingered man using a female bowling ball though, no matter what his friends say!

When you pick up the bowling ball from the ball rack, slide playing hand’s fingers through the whole, and then place the other hand onto the ball’s side. Do not let your other hand lie in-between other balls. Once you pick up your ball, they will come sliding down and quickly crush your fingers. It is not something that you want happening to you.

The second step to becoming a successful bowler is practice! It may take you awhile to develop your own style. Watch others as they play and notice their stance. How do they use their bodies to thrust the ball forward? Do not be afraid to ask for advice either.

Bowling is a really fun game that anybody can enjoy. Just remember, don’t use a ball too big or too heavy for you. It is not worth taking the risk of hurting yourself just to look cool in front of your friends. Play safe, have fun, and knock down some pins!
